What is CPTSD?
Complex PTSD (CPTSD) develops after repeated or long-term trauma, such as childhood neglect, abuse, or other experiences that leave deep emotional wounds. Unlike single-incident PTSD, CPTSD impacts every layer of your life. It affects how you see yourself, how you connect with others, and how safe you feel in your own skin.
Research shows that people with CPTSD often face years of struggle before seeking help, living with symptoms like emotional flashbacks, chronic self-doubt, and difficulty maintaining healthy relationships.
At (Re)Connect in Towson, MD, we believe healing starts with safe connection. Our trauma-informed team helps you untangle the past, rebuild trust in yourself and others, and create a future that feels calmer, steadier, and more hopeful.
CPTSD doesn’t just live in the past it shows up in the present, shaping how you think, feel, and relate to the world. You may notice yourself:
Struggling with intense self-criticism or feelings of worthlessness
Experiencing emotional flashbacks that pull you back into past pain
Avoiding relationships or feeling disconnected from people you care about
Living in a state of constant vigilance or expecting the worst
Battling shame, guilt, or a sense of “never being enough”
Numbing emotions with substances, overwork, or other coping tools
These patterns are not signs of weakness. They are signs of survival. Your nervous system has been working overtime to keep you safe but therapy can help you move from surviving to living.
The Signs That CPTSD Is Affecting Your Life
How CPTSD Therapy Works Here
-
Your work with us begins with an in-depth intake session where we learn about your history, symptoms, strengths, and the impact trauma has had on your life. This helps us create a tailored plan that meets you exactly where you are.
-
Before any trauma processing begins, we focus on building emotional safety, grounding skills, nervous-system regulation, and trust in the therapeutic relationship. Stabilization ensures you feel supported, resourced, and capable of staying present during deeper work.
-
Once you feel stable and ready, we gently explore and process traumatic experiences using approaches such as EMDR, experiential methods, somatic awareness, and attachment-based therapy. Processing is always paced according to your comfort level, never rushed.
-
As you move through processing, we focus on integrating new insights, shifting long-held patterns, and repairing the ways trauma has impacted your relationships, sense of identity, boundaries, and emotional responses.
-
Healing from trauma is not linear. We provide ongoing support as you practice new skills, navigate daily life, and continue rebuilding connection, to yourself, to others, and to the world around you.
How is CPTSD different from PTSD?
PTSD often stems from a single traumatic event, while CPTSD develops from chronic or ongoing trauma such as childhood neglect, emotional abuse, or long-term relational harm. CPTSD affects identity, relationships, and emotional stability more deeply, leading to symptoms like emotional flashbacks, chronic self-criticism, and difficulty feeling safe with others.
How (Re)connect Therapy Center Helps
At (Re)Connect, we offer a space that is compassionate and supportive while also inviting growth. Our team has extensive experience in trauma recovery, addiction services, and relational therapy, which allows us to address not just the symptoms of trauma but its impact on your relationships.
We use experiential and attachment-based therapies that go beyond traditional talk therapy. Whether you come to us for individual therapy, couples therapy, or intensives, we’ll help you create a sense of safety and trust, while also encouraging the kind of change that lasts.
Adults, couples, and adult families who struggle with emotional flashbacks, chronic shame, relationship difficulties, hypervigilance, or long-standing survival patterns can benefit from CPTSD therapy. If trauma has shaped how you feel, think, or relate to others, therapy can help you step out of survival mode and reconnect with yourself and your life.
Who can benefit from CPTSD therapy?
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Do you treat complex trauma and childhood trauma?
Yes. We specialize in supporting clients with complex trauma, childhood trauma, attachment wounds, relational trauma, and long-term emotional patterns shaped by early experiences. Therapy is paced gently and grounded in safety.
-
Is trauma therapy safe if I’ve never talked about my past before?
Absolutely. You never have to share anything before you feel ready. We begin with stabilization, grounding, and emotional safety so that when you choose to explore your past, you feel supported, in control, and resourced.
-
How long does CPTSD treatment typically take?
Treatment length varies depending on your history, symptoms, and goals. Some clients find relief within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support, especially with complex trauma. We move at your pace, not on a timeline.
-
Do you provide superbills for insurance?
Yes! We are an out-of-network provider and you can absolutely use your insurance if your plan includes out-of-network coverage (most PPOs)! We will provide you with a monthly document (called a “superbill”) that you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many of our clients receive at least 50% back from their insurance companies.
-
Can CPTSD therapy help if I feel “too much” or “not enough”?
Yes. CPTSD often leads to emotional overwhelm, shutdown, or swings between the two. Therapy helps you understand these responses, develop regulation tools, and build a more stable, compassionate relationship with yourself.
-
Do you offer EMDR, somatic work, or experiential therapies?
Yes. Our clinicians are trained in EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), Gestalt Therapy, Schema Therapy, expressive arts therapy, somatic elements, and experiential approaches. We tailor the method to what feels safest and most effective for you.
