Even when you tell yourself to “move on,” some experiences stay stuck. A sound, a smell, or a passing comment can suddenly pull you back into a moment you thought you’d left behind. You may find yourself reliving painful memories, feeling anxious without knowing why, or struggling to feel safe even when nothing is “wrong.”
That’s because trauma isn’t just remembered, it’s stored. It lives in your body, emotions, and nervous system.
At (Re)Connect Therapy Center in Towson, MD, we use EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help you process those stuck memories and finally feel relief. This evidence-based therapy helps the brain reprocess traumatic experiences so they no longer hold the same emotional charge. Over time, the pain softens, the triggers ease, and you begin to feel like yourself again.
How does EMDR help with trauma and PTSD?
Can EMDR help with anxiety, depression, or grief?
Yes. EMDR can be effective for anxiety, depression, grief, and other emotional challenges when they are linked to unresolved experiences. By addressing the underlying memories or beliefs driving distress, EMDR can reduce symptoms and support emotional regulation and relief.
How EMDR Therapy Works Here
-
EMDR therapy begins with an intake session where we learn about your experiences, current symptoms, and what you hope to work through. This helps us determine whether EMDR is appropriate and how to tailor the process to your needs.
-
Together, we identify target memories, beliefs, and emotional responses connected to distress. We also focus on building grounding and regulation skills to ensure you feel safe and supported before beginning reprocessing.
-
During EMDR sessions, your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, while you focus on specific memories. This process helps the brain reprocess experiences so they become less emotionally charged.
-
Throughout EMDR work, we prioritize emotional regulation and nervous system support. If strong emotions arise, we pause to ground and stabilize, ensuring the process remains manageable and contained.
-
As memories are reprocessed, we help you integrate new insights, emotions, and beliefs into daily life. This stage supports lasting change by reinforcing a sense of safety, clarity, and emotional balance.
Instead of revisiting every detail of what happened, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, gentle tapping, or sound to activate both sides of the brain. This process helps your mind “re-file” traumatic experiences safely, reducing emotional reactivity and creating new, healthier associations. In other words, EMDR helps your brain do what it was always meant to do: heal.
While it’s best known for treating trauma and PTSD, EMDR’s benefits extend far beyond. It can also help with:
Anxiety and panic attacks
Depression or low self-worth
Grief and loss
Chronic stress or burnout
Emotional pain from past relationships or life experiences
As these experiences are reprocessed, many people describe feeling lighter, calmer, and more in control. The goal isn’t to erase the past, it’s to remove its power over your present.

Is EMDR therapy safe for adults with trauma?
Yes. EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based therapy that is widely used to treat trauma and PTSD. At (Re)Connect, EMDR is always paced carefully, with an emphasis on safety, stabilization, and emotional regulation throughout the process.
-
Can EMDR help with anxiety or panic attacks?
Yes. EMDR can be effective for anxiety and panic when these symptoms are connected to past experiences or distressing memories. By reprocessing these underlying triggers, EMDR can reduce emotional reactivity and help you feel calmer and more grounded.
-
Does EMDR therapy work for depression or low self-worth?
It can. When depression or low self-worth is linked to unresolved experiences or negative core beliefs, EMDR can help reprocess those memories and shift long-standing patterns. Many clients experience increased self-compassion, clarity, and emotional relief.

We will provide you with a monthly document (called a “superbill”) that you can send to your insurance company for reimbursement. Many of our clients receive at least 50% back from their insurance companies.

Do you provide EMDR for grief or past relationship trauma?
Yes. EMDR can support healing from grief, loss, and relational trauma by helping you process painful memories and emotions connected to past relationships. This can reduce emotional intensity and support healthier attachment and closure.

Are EMDR sessions available via telehealth?
Yes. We offer EMDR therapy both in person in Towson, MD and via secure telehealth for adults in Maryland. Your therapist will help determine whether in-person or virtual EMDR is the best fit for your needs.
